Following on from the recently released figures from Tesco, three other large supermarket chains in the UK have stated that they will also reveal their food wastage figures from 2015.

M&S. The Co-op and Waitrose will join Tesco in publishing their food wastage figures after Tesco admitted they dumped more than 28,000 tonnes of food during a period of just six months last year. It is hoped that the reporting will actually reduce the amount of food wasted each year.

The governments waste reduction group WRAP have stated that the poor buying practises of supermarkets were to blame for much of the waste and Friends of the Earth have agreed that retailers need to examine their marketing practices as they no longer fit into our resource-confined environment.

In addition to reporting on waste, retailers will also cut their carbon emissions by 25% by 2020 and hope to send just 1% of food waste to landfill by 2020.
