A carpet of green algae has covered miles of the Chinese coastline.

It began in mid-June and has steadily spread over a large area, forcing the local authorities to draft in workers and even bulldozers to help clear it.

People walk by an algae covered public beach, children swim in water covered by a thick layer of green algae.

According to scientists a change in the ecosystem as a result of human activity has caused it.

While it is not toxic to humans, algae could leave sealife gasping for air.The algae blocks sunlight from reaching the ocean and steals oxygen from the waters.
