Volkswagen has reiterated its desire to be at the forefront of developing renewable energy technology in the motor industry.

The company has announced that it will unveil a new electric car called the E-Up at this week's Frankfurt Auto Show.

This compact car will have 18 kilowatt hours energy capacity, use low carbon materials and other features friendly to the environment.

Martin Winterkorn, chief executive of Volkswagen, noted that developing low carbon transport is one of the firm's main goals.

He said: "The future will belong to lower emissions and more efficient transportation.

"The concept car now being presented in Frankfurt very realistically shows how we envision such a Volkswagen with pure electric drive - technically, visually and with regard to a practical size."

Mass production of the E-Up model is expected to begin in 2013, with a target of 2020 being set for the vehicle to reach the production levels of other compact cars.
